Since this will take plumbing and electrical work, you may want to consult a contractor!

Demo should be easy, unless you’re moving plumbing and or electrical. Make sure you’ve adequate ventilation and PPE during demo.

Cover anything you want to save.

If you want to move plumbing & electrical, you’ll need to hire pros, since you’re asking a very broad question.

For example, Toilets require a 30” wide space x 60” long, per Code- if you’re moving the toilet.

Look for water damage and repair it. Make sure the source of the water is addressed.

New drywall should be “green board”, per Code.

New exhaust fans have to move 60 CFM minimum, per Code. It may be 70 & I would NOT be cheap about an exhaust fan.

The tile in the shower must be 72” above the floor minimum, by Code. I would go to the ceiling.

Keep in mind that residential bathroom vanities are 2” shorter & 2” shallower than kitchen base cabinets, if 2” makes a difference in your space planning.

Codes are different per area. Ours are, different than stated above. So if pulling permits, get a copy of your local codes. Research, look to you tube for tutorials on how to gut and redo a bathroom. They will help you the most.

  • We are in the process right now of remodeling our master bathroom. It has been a lot of work. I would consult a contractor if you have never done this before. If you want a simple refresh of the space you could paint, buy a new shower curtain, throw rugs until your ready for a full remodel. Plus you will be without the use of your bathroom for that whole time so there is some preparation for that as well.
