Once the weeds have shown their faces, you mostly need to pluck them out by the roots. The only difference between weeds and flowers are our preferences. For most people, Queen Anne’s Lace is only good for mowing down. I, however, love its tiny complexity and their home for bees.
Pull or dig up the weeds in your flower bed and put down Preen Weed Preventer. It will prevent the seed born weeds from germinating. Root born weeds you will still need to pull as they come back into the edges of the garden. The Preen really does help and I hardly ever have to pull weeds now except for creeping charlie.
I'll them on by hand.
Pull them out, usually easier after a rain storm when the ground is softened.
I second the Preen. My husband does spring cleaning on the beds and then puts down a good layer of Preen. We are good till the next spring cleaning has to be done.
Suggestion: Go to your local Library & see if they have a copy of the Gardening Book, "Lasagna Gardening"...it'll tell you how to use Newspapers & ground cover to choke out weeds. The Book is "The Lazy Gardeners Guide to getting 'more for less'"!
Cover them with mulch or pebbles. No sunlight, no weeds. This will not bother your regular plants.
