Hi Wendy! First clean everything you want to paint with a degreaser like TSP. Next, you'll lightly sand the wood to give the paint something to grip to. Wipe everything down again. Then, you'll prime the wood. After that dries, you can paint. It'll take 2-3 coats. Good luck with your project! It's time consuming but it's so worth it :)
Tricia has got it. If you don't want to sand you can use a liquid deglosser. It's like liquid sandpaper. You can also use Krud Kutter to clean everything.
I would strip and sand it all off.
Simple
Prewash all with TSP ( get at Home Depot)
Prime with Shellac Bullseye
Paint
This is exactly how most pro painters would do this, and will give great results
In just a few steps you can be ready for paint!
Clean really well
Scuff sand with 220 grit sandpaper to roughen up the surface and give the paint something to stick to.
Wipe off all dust
Prime with BIN Shellac Based Primer (especially if you're painting a lighter color)
Paint!
