Hello Miriam. Remove the rust with fine steel wool and dish soap. (Normally I would not recommend using soap on cast iron, but you can here because I'm going to advise you to condition the pan afterward.) When all the rust is gone, rinse it with clean water. Then dry the pan with paper towels. Then season the pan by putting a small amount of oil in it and rub the entire inside with it. Put it in a 450 degree oven for 20 minutes. Let it cool and then it's all done. You can cook with it when you're ready to.

    Steps to Remove the Rust:

    1. Spray the rusty area with cooking spray and rub away the rust with a soft cloth. Clean off the excess oil when the rust is removed.
    2. Moisten the rust with dish soap.
    3. Cut off one side of a potato and scrub the soapy area with the raw potato.²

Hi , first get rid of the rust with a fine wire brush or brillo pad . Wash in hot soapy water , using a brillo pan , rinse well . Dry the pan thouroghly and rub a little oil on the pan , wipe off any excess. Put in 375° oven for a half hour , let cool . Then rest the oil and heat process one or two more times ! I used to do only one oil/heat seasoning process , but when I heard of doing this same method but repeating it 3-4x's gives it the best treatment , and it does!!! It's like a non stick pan , and stays that way for much longer !!! I do the triple seasoning about every 3 years...
