Hi Tracy,
What we did was put a solid sheet of 3/4" plywood between the mattress and box spring, it works well for us. I see you already placed a heavy board hopefully in between them.
My only other suggestion would be to save up and shop the sales, usually around holidays. That will give you time to find the best deal and quality. Mattresses usually last about 10 years.
Hmmm, perhaps Amazon has someting that could overlay a mattress.
Hope your back is better.
Sounds like its time for a new bed.
If you belong to Costco, they offer a wide choice of mattresses and gel pads in a variety of firmness levels. You can check their website at Costco.com. if you decide you don't like it, they'll take it back.
Sounds like it has broken down. If over 5 years old, time for new mattress.
If the bed is over 8 years old and mattress toppers don't help, start shopping for a new mattress. They have decent sales at tax time, which less than a month away. I have been able to stretch mine to 10 years, but even more expensive mattresses break down over time. I have a lumbar pillow, see if that helps until you can score a new mattress.
It sounds like you need a new mattress. But in the short term, try turning it the other way. That way your back will be in a different position on the mattress.
