Well the outside is very rough. Need to remove hardware and scrape off the cracked and peeling veneer. Sand down, prime and paint with oil based primer and paint. Redo inside like you said, and you have a new coffee table or accent table with storage. Have fun.

Hi, What I have done with large trunks ( great for storage) clean inside and outside well . Then in mine I sealed inside with polly that way it is great for blankets etc. Outside on the bottom I put casters with or with out locks . Then I painted the trunk , replaced the handles with leather strips from a mans belt. ( THRIFT STORE }. and used it for a COFFEE Table. For smaller trunks I put on metal legs any height you want,... I buy mine from HOBBY LOBBY. They can be used for night stands , end tables, or just stand alone . They look great. I hope I gave you some ideas you might like. Shirley

I've seen people use these on end, placed shelves inside and made it into a cabinet. So cute!

You can use them as chairs, dining tables with ancient style. That's how I take advantage of the old trunk

Cool trunk! Inside I would modge podge with maps or pieces of maps that are aged. Coffee table with rustic wheels (I think Hobby Lobby has some) would look good. Or turn on its side add hairpin legs and make into a mini bar with wine shelves and wine glass rack. Have fun!
