We bought an old house that had paneling in every room. We calked the cracks then painted with aroma free Kilz primer paint. Then just painted each room as we wanted with solid paint, or sponge paint and wallpaper borders at the tops in the dining and living rooms. It was beautiful! The sponge painting was done on one wall that was warped and it hid the warping (we used 3 hues of same color to sponge paint)

I've painted a lot of paneling and it looks great. Just be sure to prime it first using Bulls Eye 1 2 3.
Robin...We painted and I really like it. Clean well, sand any places the might need it...you can prime or buy paint with primer already in it.
