Hi , we did this. We cleared out all of the mulch , pulled and plants or weeds growing in the area . Then if you are putting in a border allow room for that in clearing the space . Next , lay down a weed barrier cloth , include the area where the border will go . Next , put in border , then fill in with the stone.

  • Rake out all the old mulch, clear any weeds. Then lay a good quality landscape fabric. Install a border to keep the stones from migrating. Fill with rocks or stones of choice. I ordered mine from a local landscape supplier. They dumped in my driveway and we filled wheelbarrows to take to the area. Even with the modest delivery charge it was much less expensive than purchasing bags from a home improvement center. They sell by scoop or ton.

Zip...You just have to remove the mulch. We removed ours and found that the landscape fabric needed to be replaced too. We did that then bought chipped brick and love it.

Good point from Naomie to pay the delivery charge and get all the rocks delivered at once, rather than trying to cope with hauling smaller, more costly individual bags yourself.

Keep in mind that once the weed barrier fabric and rocks are securely in place, they will stay put for maintenance-free and no-cost years to come.
