We removed ours using water squirt bottles, a scraper, and shop vac after covering everything with sheets and tarps. Then our neighbors did theirs and they attached their scraper TO the Shop vac attachment with duct tape and saved a ton of clean up!!! Wish we thought of that. It is long and tedious but not a difficult job to do. Then paint the ceiling. It will be still slightly textured, but ours looked great! like we planned it that way

Hi Judy, quite a few of our hometalkers have shared tutorials on how they got rid of their popcorn ceilings. Perhaps one of these will help you - https://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=popcorn%20ceilings

Judy....Sooooo many good videos and they even have buckets and scrapers for it. Just Google and you will find.

  • a good scraper and elbow grease :)

  • Hi Judy,

We have removed a few rooms of popcorn ceilings. You will need a scraper/putty knife and a spray bottle to saturate the popcorn ceiling. Let the water sit on it for a minute or so and then scrape it. After that you will need to sand the ceilings. Then you will have to spray texture on the ceiling to match your current wall texture. Then paint a coat of primer and a coat of paint.

If you have an older house get the popcorn ceiling checked for asbestos. Before you scrape any thing.
