I suggest using spackle...even though you may continue to get some settlement cracks, silicone will be hard to remove later on and doesn't always take touch up paint well.
Depends on the substrate (drywall or plaster) and how large a crack is forming. Try using a fine mesh tape (sold in HD or Lowe’s) from their spackle/sheetrock aisle - then spackle over that.🌷
