Go to your local nursery, they can give you recommdations.

  • Hi Ann, it depends on your zone, but if you call your local cooperative extension, they should be able to tell you what grass is best for your climate and shade since you have oak trees. Good luck!

Many oak trees produce a substance that does not allow anything to grow underneath them. So, regardless of the type of grass, how you amend the soil underneath, or how much you water, it will not change anything. You may want to consider gravel, mulch, or patio stone.

As as far as your clay soil, you would need to amend the soil with A LOT of organic material (compost, manure, etc.). Good luck!

    Hi Ann,

In general you don’t want to plant much of anything under oak trees because the type of watering you would have to do is damaging to oaks and encourages fungus which generally ends up killing your tree. Lucy’s suggestion for gravel is a great one and it can really be attractive, as would using pavers and making it into a shady seating area. If you really want plants there containers or raised beds on the shade perimeter might also work.
