How do I remove carpet that has been glued to a tile floor?

Wow, dont you just want to kill the previous owners sometimes? Try soaking it with some acetone to loosen it up. Do a test spot first. Not to be a downer, but may be the tile was in bad shape, that could be why they covered it.

You could try a heat gun to loosen the glue or Kelli's recommendation of acetone.

If you are going to cover the tile again, then use a flat square edged shovel to help you to remove the residue.

I once removed glued-down commercial type carpeting from a bathroom by soaking it with water and lifting it with a kitchen spatula. It was disgusting and messy but the vinyl tile underneath was fine.

Depends on what you re putting back down, but when I have had floors replaced, except carpet , professionals have laid down thin wood and then put down the flooring. The wood has a name, bu??? They left the glued carpet down and laid the wood on top of then new flooring. They took up carpeting and pad in living room when laying new. In one house they had to scrape padding of floor. They put lots of nails in the wood. Many glues dry out by the time flooring needs to be replaced. The tile made a flat even surface for the carpeting. Ask a professional carpet store. May even try Lowes.
