Chalk Paint Goodwill Hutch Makeover

Using chalk paint can be a very fast and easy way to makeover a piece of thrifted furniture. There aren't many steps in the chalk painting process, and it's a great way for beginners to jump in and get started with DIY home decorating.

This beautiful white and blue hutch didn't start out looking so lovely. I found it at Goodwill in need of a makeover and update.

The front of the drawer was broken, and the luan was chipping.

I peeled off the luan and sanded down the wood underneath to a smooth finish. Not all painted furniture pieces will require this much work, but you always want to prep the surface by cleaning it well and making any repairs before you begin painting.

Once I cleaned the hutch using just a mild soap and water mix, I removed the glass panels. Then I began painting. I used Annie Sloan Duck Egg Blue chalk paint on the interior and Old White on the exterior.

I added new door handles to the upper doors, chalk painted right over the hardware on the drawer and lower doors, and returned the glass panels to the upper doors.

You can seal your chalk paint with wax or a clear top coat for more protection.

Now, this old out dated hutch has a new home in my dining room at a fraction of the cost a brand new hutch would have cost.
