I always use a solvent based primer, either oil base or pigmented shellac. For white and light colors it's best to use latex or waterborne enamel as oil base enamel will yellow over time. I'm partial to waterborne enamel as it dries to almost as hard a finish as oil base does. There can be big difference between the cheap latex enamels and the better grades of latex. The cheap latex enamels are prone to chip and peel even if proper prep was done.

Prep is key! Make sure you scrub everything down really well, take off the doors, scuff sand with 220 grit sandpaper and wipe off all the dust.

I would use BIN Shellac based primer as is will block any bleed through, and it will help your paint stick really well.

Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim and Door Enamel paint is used by alot of cabinet refinishers. It's durable and easy to use. Or benjamin moore Advance is a great paint too!

    Goodluck!!

If you are looking to repaint - I recently discovered Oil Bond (you can get it here on Amazon https://amzn.to/2wGmiNO) where you rub this first on your cabinets. This helps the paint stick so you DON'T NEED TO SAND!! Also add a bit of Oil Bond to your paint. I would also spend a bit more for specific cabinet paint to ensure a smooth finish. I recently did this on my bathroom vanity and it turned out fantastic! Here are my pics of my project: https://wp.me/pUbK5-yRy

Hi ! I used Benjamin Moore's advance paint ! No sanding or primer needed !

first you will need to clean the cabinets , I used Krud Kutter de greaser , then the same brand de glosser , both at home depot for about $6 each . The first gets off years of dust, dirt , oil , and polishes , the de glosser takes off the "shine" on the cabinets. " tip *** number each door so you know where it goes as well as the hardware for each door put in separate ziploc bags with the coordinating number door !

this might seem like a waste of time , but you will be happy you did when it comes time to put everything back on !!!! bags

I used no primer ! And used 2 coats of white paint over my oak cabinets ! They can out great and are easy to clean . Good luck !
