How do I use chalk paint?

Hi, I hear a lot about chalk paint, what's the big deal? My dinning room table is 50 years old! It has a lot of deep gouges in it which I'm going to fill in and I'm not sure what else to do with it, I have to do the work in the house so I don't want to do much sanding. I think there is veneer on it or something. What's the best way and easiest way to take it from beast to beauty? I think the chalk paint I've seen on some of the DIY'ers is pretty. How do I do this?
