If you are referring to a double sized quilt or a double ring wedding quilt either should be able to be washed in the washing machine. If you don't have a front loading machine it is worth the money for a large quilt to take it to a Laundromat to wash using one. The top loading agitator type washers do okay, but the ones that spin like the front loaders do wash a large object like a quilt better.

I always wash my quilts in the delicate cycle and set the water level on the highest setting using cold water.

If you have any spots, hand clean those with a mild detergent prior to machine washing.

Also, never use woolite. contrary to popular belief, it is bad for delicate fabrics. It can turn the fabric yellow and mottled. Never put in the dryer either. Having had a quilt shop, all my ladies that made their quilts to put in my shop told me these tidbits.

You will definitely need a larger machine for this job. Use cold water and a gentle soap. Front loader machines are best since they gentlY tumble the quilt instead of forcing it from side to side. If you want, you can place it in the WARM dryer for about ten minutes to warm it up and then hang to dry. Do not walk away from the dryer, wait for the 10 minutes. This helps to remove any major wrinkles, depending on the fabric.

Test your quilt to see if any colors bleed....some do not pre wash the materials used in a quilt. Add a color catcher to the cold wash. If the batting is a Cotten or wool, hang out to dry....dryer heat can shrink those Fabrics.
