The birds like to sit on & use my porch swing as a restroom. I have tried the plastic owl trick with miserable results. I currently have rubber snakes zip-tied to the swing & it has decreased the amount of bird poop that I have to remove before sitting down. Does anybody know of a way to repel the birds without harming them?
Old cd's tied to a string, so they move with the breeze, has helped keep birds away from my blueberry bushes, so I think it would work here too. Good luck!
I had an area by an outdoor fan that the blue birds kept trying to build a nest. I got a bar of Ivory soap and rubbed it all around the area. The birds did not like the smell and left. Worth a try.

buy a cover/tarp for your swing
I agree. Using a cover on the swing might be the best way to keep it clean. Or maybe you can hang chimes nearby to scare them off with the noise.
You need to make it unpleasant for the birds to roost on the bar. Perhaps you can zip tie some plastic spikes to the top bar.

I use this product for my patio and it works great: https://amzn.to/2TUPizA
Try something like a ribbon that floats around in the air. The movement helps to deter the birds.
It makes a perfect perch, enjoy the birds, take some pictures! Or as others have said put a cover over the swing, Enjoy! Simple fix?
Go to Home Depot website and look up "bird spikes" for deterrent you can install on the top rail for like $30
No harm to the animals!

I've heard that Irish Spring soap will work very well, too, and will also help keep rabbits away.
