We used 1/4 in Masonite. It's lightweight and about $7/sheet. Finished it like drywall, then primer and paint. Looks great!

We used these thin sheets in a bathroom we put in a basement of a house years ago, it is like paneling, but it is finished and comes ready to use, no painting or anything. They are light weight and would be easy to work with. We got ours at a home improvement store, I think it was Menards, but that was back in the eighties when we were fixing up a repo that the basement was horrible. I think they are somewhere around the flooring or paneling.

Brenda, I would suggest Contact paper. Cover the big spaces of insulation with sheets of foam board, just to have a smooth surface, which you cover with Contact paper of your choice. Different stores have different patterns, so don’t buy until you find what you really like. Happy Spring!

They’re all kinds of prefinished paneling products, at the big DIY stores. If you’ve got enough clearance around the area, that combustion or fire is not a problem, then I would look for something that has a washable finish, or future cleaning
