The pansies sold in my area of the rockies will even bloom under a foot of snow! The nurseries here sell a particularly hardy pansy.

Pansies are really hardy this time of year, yet it really depends on where you live. For myself in Michigan, I would definitely choose Pansies along with some more flower-related questions for a local Home Depot or Lowe’s employee. Their staff is very friendly and helpful especially in their garden centers.
Evergreens are especially hardy and for flowers... Perennials! I luv my yellow day- lilly's best because they bloom from late spring/early summer all the way through early fall! w/no upkeep! Lots of green foilage and tons of yellow blooms!

What Zone are you in Joan? I am in zone 9 and what works for me might not work for you.
