How to make my front stoop not slippery?

My front porch is brick, but only around the edge, the inside area is red tile. It looks great but it is slippery as can be when wet. It's also about 1/2 inch higher than the bricks and I have fallen more than once when I've caught the toe of my shoe on the tile. Not a good thing when you are 73. How can we make the tile not slippery? I don't know if anything can be done about the uneven surface, but does anyone have a suggestion for the tile?

I would go to an independent tile store and see what they can offer. Take pictures with you, surely they have ran into this before. Need something that will work with your climate and type of tile.

May even have suggestions in the height differences. Good luck.

They sell a gritty mixture made exactly for that. People use it in their inground pools. You can possibly mix that with a clear sealer and paint a few coats on to give you more "tread". If you want to use actual colored paint, you can add it to that as well. I'm sorry, but I don't know how to help with leveling out your step though. Best of luck!

There are black patches that will adhere to steps they are covered with a gritty substance for traction. Big box diy is where I found them.

you can mix some sand w/ non shiny clear coat(not shiny will look like the regular surface.) and paint it on there. any hardware store can help you find your ingredients. they might even have something premixed.

  • There is paint out there that has grit in it for this type of thing, but you probably want something with a clear finish to not cover the tiles. I would definitely ask the paint department in your home improvement store. They may have a clear porch and floor paint that has this in it or can suggest something.

There are coatings you can buy that are made for just that purpose. For you go online and type “non-slip coatings for tiles” you’ll see several different companies that make products to give tiles grip. One that I found gets 4.3 stars is Stone Doctors Stone Grip. Good luck with your project.
