Debora...You can use wood to make the frame and cover with tin.

You could use pvc and cover the frame with fabric. But how strudy do you need it to be? Also where you live will you have to contend with snow and if so how much? Do you get a lot of wind? Will these be mainly to keep the sun out or keep rain off the windows and/or side of the house?

I'm trying to give a little cover to keep rain at bay while trying to get into the house. I'm in Grass Valley, CA, and we only get a small bit of snow at 1500' which does not last, go up hill a little ways and it sticks! I was thinking of the pvc and fabric just to get me through the rainy season, (which for once is a long one here!!!!) I have both materials to try with....tomorrow is suppose to be dry with rain on Monday....yes I do get wind and the awning will flap if not correctly attached to the house.I can add weight to the inside of the pvc to make it heavier. I think I will try it!!!! Pictures to come if I can make it happen! THANKS!!!!

if you make one from PVC and need to make it heavier; adding sand to the inside of the pipes is one way. I make animal/feral cat traps for TNR and do this so they are heavier and cats don't escape by pushing light weight PVC traps up. but you'll need to accomondate additional weight with better cleats/bracing to hold it up.

This one will repeal rain and has a pvc frame for some strength in a light wind. Not intended for snow loads or very intense winds. I have seen a good selection of outdoor materials like this at Joann's fabrics. They run sales so that would help with the cost.

Hubby built one that withstood our big snow storm we had last month. Bought a piece of galvanized metal from Lowes. Attached it to a frame made of 2x4's. Simple and good looking since the color of the metal matched the color of the house. Works great for keeping the rain off the side of the house and windows.
