My girlfriend moved to a new house and she gets ants all year round. She's tried numerous products to get rid of the ants and nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

I use diatomaceous earth around the base of the house. It has kept the ants away for several years.

I have had this problem. Find a granule that kills ants, spread through the whole yard. Then I put ant traps you stick into the ground by my house where I thought they may be coming in. Keep pets away.

  • Hi Jeannie - Those little buggers are relentless, aren't they?!? This is the most effective method and all-natural spray DIY that we use with ants. It's best indoors, but will also work outside with more frequent applications. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

The only thing I've found that works is Bonide Termite and Carpenter Ant spray that I put on the outside of the foundation. I wear a mask and gloves to apply. Got it at TrueValue in a 1/2 gal spray bottle.

Then inside I use a non-toxic EcoLogic Ant Spray that I spray on them or wipe some on the edges of the counters, door thresholds etc. Victor's and EcoSmart also make a non-toxic spray.

Spray house exterior at ground level with Ortho ant killer.

Wipe interior walls and kitchen counters with distilled white vinegar.

Store all salt, sugar, food items in tightly sealed containers.

Any food/liquid spills must be immediately cleaned.

Scrub out trash cans with soap and water, rinse with white vinegar. Line cans with multiple trash can liners in case of food/liquid leaks. Dispose of all food scraps. All fats should be double wrapped and frozen until garbage day to avoid attracting ants or worse.

Place mint oil along exterior doorways. Place bay leaves inside kitchen cabinets.

Spray yard with peppermint and clove oil in water, with a few drops of Dawn Ultra blue liquid dish detergent.

  • Terro liquid bait traps work near instantly, only thing I ever use.

I've had good luck with Amdro bait traps, and they also sell a granule product you can place where you need it.

Some people also swear by putting corn meal (Jiffy is one) near the ants' trails and ant hills. Apparently, ants can't digest it, and it kills them--with no risk to your pets, kids, or other wildlife outdoors.

If you see ants, wipe them up with a solution of 50-50 vinegar and water, or straight vinegar. White vinegar kills ants and also repels them. If you have an ant problem, try using diluted vinegar to clean hard surfaces, including floors and countertops, throughout your home.
