you could use pavers or pea gravel here are some other ideas

I would use pea gravel. Or you can mosaic pebbles around it.
Or cut short Bock's of wood and use around the circular patio in a sunbeam design. Then fill gaps with pea gravel or short ground cover alpines.
Another option would be to use pavers.
Sand and a variety of discards can be used to extend an existing patio. Mixed mediums can be very frugal and add to the charm. Broken concrete and bricks are very versatile and are often free on Craigslist. Repurposing them is fun and keeps them out of the landfill.
Pavers would be an easy solution.
