How to clean up my weedy perennial bed?

Last year I had some health problems and couldn't get my flower garden taken care of, so it was completely covered with weeds and grass. Because it is a perennial, and I am 84, it will be so difficult to try and dig out all the unwanted for fear of disturbing the flowers. I love working in it, but must do it a bit at a time. I don't thing layering mulch would help? If anyone has a better idea for me, I would appreciate. My asparagus was also full of grass, weeds and moss!! Thank you.

I'm sorry, mine is out of hand this year too. The best way unfortunately is just to hand pull out the bad by holding down the good with the other hand. Take it easy, good luck.

Thanks Kelli. This getting old isn't all it's cracked up to be, no strength or stamina like I had 10 years ago!!! So my love of working in my garden has taken its toll.

Any way you consider will take work. I would consider finding students, relatives or anyone else looking for some money. We have a 'NextDoor' neighborhood group that usually has kids looking for this kind of work and they do it in an amazing short length of time and very economically.

    • Contact your local Department on Aging. They may have some resources for you. If you are on Nextdoor.com, hop on and ask your neighbors for help. I have some high school and college kids help me out occasionally.

I'd try scattering Preen weed kill granules on this area. It does not affect perennial plantings.

      Hi, Arlene,

Your perennials will be fine. I've used Preen for almost 10 years, with no ill affects to perennials. Just don't plant any flower seeds in this area!
