transplanting

We are getting ready to do outside work on our home and I need to move some plants:azaleas. iris. creeping phlox and a few I don't know the name of. Since they have already bloomed is it safe to move them? As we move around the house I will need to dig up other plants and re-arrange my flower bed and some will still be in bloom.....can they survive this?

It's certainly not ideal to move them now. Irises are pretty hardy, but it might be tough on some of the other plants to move them in the summer heat. I know I moved some groundcovers about a week ago and they are not doing so hot in our record heat (yes, today we hit the highest temperature ever in Denver).

It's not the ideal time, but it sounds like you have no choice. Watering is going to be the key. Try to make sure you have a spot for the plants to go, to minimize the time they are out of the ground, and try to move them on cloudy or overcast days, or at least not in full-on sun. Good luck!

Adding to the chorus, not an idea time, and adding a solo ~ get as much of the root ball as possible to minimize the stress on the plant. If at all possible I do recommend that you wait until fall.

making a pinhole in the bottom of a gallon milk jug is a good way to deliver moisture constantly to a new plant

Thank-you...I was hoping they would be alright and I will hold out as long as I can before moving them.

I agree with all....noat really the best time....however, Douglas said it best, if you have to do it, Minimize the time they are out of the ground....be careful uprooting....doing it on a casty day, the less sun, the bettter and watering!
