Chest of drawers, cedar chest or steamer chest?
Use Chalk paint and paint sparingly or thick depending on how white washed you want it. Try it on an underside to see how it works or scrap piece of wood.
Latex paint can be watered down to give a whitewash look. Mix equal amounts of water and white paint to start, in a small container. You need to try it on a piece of wood to see if it's the level of opaque you want. Odds are, you'll end up with a different ratio, depending on the look you want. Chalk paint works also.

I use oil based paint thinned with paint thinner. Gives a nice translucent look. If it gets too thick you can wipe off before it drys with paint thinner. Good luck.
