All depends on your soil actually. If you have lots of clay, well, sand is helpful to help break up the clumps, but in whatever soil you have, compost is a must. Please try and stay away from anything chemical, since it affects the water, your food, and the beneficial insects needed to pollinate. There are many different ones available in garden centers and they can even usually test your soil to see what it needs. Just remember, a little compost goes a long way.
Oh, and I like to add my compost in the fall, so when the snow melts, it waters the soil with the nutrients and we're off to start a new year gardening. It's cooler in the fall, and we don't have to wait until the soil thaws which makes it less work. You can always top it off a bit if you think it needs it since some plants need more than others. I never use Miracle Gro or any other chemical products because they are toxic.
