How to create a Flat World to hang for school parents to look at?

We have International Day at school and planning on making a Flat World made with mosaic tiles. We're having trouble locating tiles to fill an area 40" x 24" and wondering if you had another idea? We're planning on hanging this project outside where many class room projects will be displayed. My question is . . . will this project be too heavy?

Michaels or Hobby Lobby have small tiles. Mosaic tiles at the homecenter. How about broken glass bottles, plates, etc. Plastic squares or discs.

Michaels doesn't sell mosaic tiles anymore but Hobby Lobby is the best. Thanx

I did a craft once using painted eggshells. Once sealed, they looked like broken tile. Very lightweight.

You can make your own tiles by going to the 2nd hand stores or even dollar stores and buying large plates, put a blanket or something over them (and wear goggles) and hammer some pieces out of them. The blanket keeps them from flying about. Then use the same materials to stick tiles and you have your mosaic. You will find a number of colors and a variety of shapes to use. Hope this helps. You might get even bigger discount on any you find with chips or cracks. Also, yard sales right now might be going on in your area to get them for even less expense. Hope this helps Sue.

Thank you but I teach preschoolers. However, this summer for camp, I think the older campers would love the whole experience.
