  • HI Barbara,

What types of whites are you talking about. White clothing I bleach, usually I use one or two table spoons of bleach per washing machine load. This is for my husbands white undershirts and socks. Anything that is a light color but can not be bleached I use hydrogen peroxide. I will add a cup or so to the clothing inside the drum of the washing machine.

For upholstery or carpets I use a really simple hydrogen peroxide and water solution. I fill a dollar store spray bottle ( these are the ones I like) with half water half hydrogen peroxide and spray it onto the designated area. I was taught this awesome trick by a professional upholstery and carpet cleaner, and it works like a charm. It brightens as the hydrogen peroxide dries and can really bring something back to its original color.

Lastly, bleach can kill good bacteria in a septic system. If you have a septic system I would be very cautious with bleach use. I learned this lesson the hard way here at our new house.

I'm also a fan of "oxy bgen cleaners" but Oxiclean costs to much $$$, I buy a much less costly product at the Dollar Tree store in my neighborhood for about 1/3 of the price of Oxiclean. It's called AWESOME power, OXYGEN base Cleaner. I pay $1.00 per 16 oz. Tub, plus tax. It costs approx. $6.00 + tx for a 2 lb tub of Oxiclean. The oxygen cleaning powder from the dollar store works just as well as the more expensive product. I've tried them both several times (in numerous cleaning situations) so I could be certain that the less expensive product works as well as the big name brand does. There's no difference except the price. U have to use hot water with any oxygen cleaning product, if u want it to work for dirt & stains. I also use it to clean my fiberglass bathtub. It works very well.

  • Oxiclean or Old Fashioned Bluing if it's real bad.

Mrs. STEWART'S laundry bluing is the best. You'll find it in the laundry section.

Use it only with white articles.
