DIY Scrap Wood Art

It is easy to use scrap wood to make a rustic piece of art for your home. We made this for my mother in law for Christmas. You could add any design to the front. A letter or monogram would be great! My husband chose to paint a music note because his mom loves music and is in the church choir.

I started by cutting down some 1/2″x6″ boards into 2″ widths and sanding them down. Then, I stained a third of the boards with three different colors.

Lay the boards out in your desired order. Apply wood glue on each interior edge. Line up and hold together with clamps. We put paint cans on top for a flat surface. Be sure to wipe away excess glue that squirts out the cracks.

Trace your desired shape. We did a square so the boards would be diagonal. Cut out with a saw.

Add a frame from a bit more wood.  I cut the ends at a 45 degree miter and routed out the inside so that the frame would sit around the edge on both sides.

We cut a small piece of the scraps and used wood glue to attach it to the back as a stand. Alternatively, you could add hanging hardware.

Enjoy your scrap wood art!
