Is it a smooth surface like drywall? Just like walls just overhead. Depends on your damage. Need more information please. Water, cracks, peeling paint?????
If it's a simple repair, just fill the hole or crack with spackle or wall mud, smooth and feather the edges then let dry. Once it's dry, check to make sure it didn't shrink. (You can now by nonshrinking wall mud.) If needed add more product then smooth again. Once it's all dry and smooth prime the area then paint the ceiling. If there is water damage, make sure the problem is resolved first
Water stains will bleed through if not sealed with a product like kilz
