We are moving into my deceased aunt's house. After years of neglect we are finding embedded urine as well as dog and cat feces. How do I get rid of the smell and any traces of the feces?

We moved into a house that had 3 cats that had peed everywhere so I feel your pain. We pulled up all of our carpet, and put Kilz down on the floor, let it dry, and then put new carpet on top. Kilz can be found at any hardware store.

Denise...Chas' does have a really good suggestion. I would open windows, use deodorizers as we worked on a house much the same and with open windows and doors and the deodorizers if helped with the sick feeling from the smell. It is terrible and I feel for you but all these ideas will help in time.

If there is any carpet I would remove the carpet. Trying to rid the carpet of old cat urine stains is nearly impossible no matter how many times you clean it with a carpet cleaner. You might think you have it clean but the smell will be noticeable on humid days.

Thanks for all the ideas. Under the carpeting we found beautiful Oak hardwood floors. Now the question is, how do we get rid of the smell from the wood? From what I understand we're going to have to completely refinish the floors which is going to be extremely expensive also I was told that we had to replace the subfloor if we really want to get rid of the smell. Any other suggestions of how to get it out of wood?
