How do I use a clear coat?

I am refinishing a dining table top for my porch and using unicorn spit for a fun and colorful stain. Is it ok to seal the top with tung oil and then polycrylic? I want to use something that’s durable and food safe. Thank you!

Hi Dee. I love using unicorn spit too. Tung oil makes it darker. Here are some suggestions, and you can go on you tube lots of good info there. Good luck on Jul 15, 2018

I would use polyurethane or Resin. There is a great resin kit on Amazon. It will definitely protect the table.

Thank you Peggy. I’ve never used resin before and am afraid to try it for the first time on such a large project. Is the polyurethane easy to apply?

The polyacrylic may not stick to the ring oil, it is usually used as a protective top coat on its own, at least that is the way I was taught with tung oil.

Hi Dee, I refinished my kitchen table by sanding it all down and then staining it. After staining and drying I applied 6 coats of water based

    Polyurethane. Turned out great.

Hint: use water based not oil based (If you can) oil based is very hard to work with and it takes forever to dry. Also use a quality foam brush when applying it. Good luck

  • Oil and water won't mix. Your best bet is a water based polyurethane to seal everything up.

Food safe clear coats are typically used for interior food preparation surfaces. For an outside table I have used water based Varathane from Home Depot. They sell a special brush just for water based urathanes. I put three coats on sanding with 220 or finer between coats.
