Probably the easiest and safest hack for cleaning both silver and silver plate is to use plain old fashioned toothpaste with no additives like whitener, gel, baking soda, etc. Use a damp soft rag for flat open areas and a soft toothbrush for the more intricate areas. It rinses off easily with warm water and buff them dry with a soft cloth. Toothpaste does not take off minute layers of the metal like the foil methods do and could harm anything if it is actually silver plate. Silver plate damages fairly easily if cleaned with the wrong things. Both the foil method and silver polish you get a gray film that can be hard to get off.

I use Wright's silver polish as it comes with a little sponge. Makes it super easy to clean silver in all the crevices.
