I LOVE antiquing wax. I think it can make any painted project have so much more depth! I want to share with you all how you can add black wax to a mirror!

For this project you want to start with a nice clean surface. Lightly wipe project with a damp shop towel to remove any dust or gunk. :)

Tape inside edges of mirror with painters tape.

Taped mirror

Once the inside edges of your mirror are taped you can begin by applying a thin coat of your chalk style paint to the mirror. I used "Garden Trowel" from the Magnolia Home line of Joanna Gaines. You can get this color at Target. :)

After you have a applied a good first coat of paint you want to let paint fully dry. Depending on the humidity this can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

When first coat of paint is fully dry you can start to add a second coat of paint. Apply second coat of paint in another thin layer. You do not want the paint too thick in or you will have thick uneven spots.

The second coat of paint will take another 30 minutes to an hour to dry. When second coat of paint is all dry you are ready to add the black antiquing wax!

The black wax I used

When applying black wax lightly dip the end of your brush (I used a stencil brush because they are small. Perfect size for a mirror.:) into the black wax and begin brushing the black wax onto all of the raised details of your mirror. You can add as much or as little black wax as you would like.

I brushed on about 3 coats of black wax to this mirror. The client I was painting for loves black wax and she really wanted it to stand out. :)

If your piece has lots of nooks and crannies you can pack the black wax into those nooks and crannies to add dark highlights.

PRO TIP: If you have too much black wax you can wipe off excess with a shop towel.

PRO TOP: If you are having a hard time getting the black wax smooth add a little clear wax to your project first. THEN apply the black wax. This will help the black wax go on smoother.
