My husband has drilled many a hole for me in a planter. When he wakes up I'll ask what drill bit he used for clay, ceramic, etc. planters.

  • A drill with a masonry/tungstun drill bit will work great.

Can buy a drill for glass etc. at hardware store. Otherwise put styrofoam in bottom for drainage.

Hello-we have used a cordless drill to place holes in the bottom of synthetic pots. Its easier to do when empty— we just learned!

I would put rocks in the bottom of the pot before adding the soil. Make sure to add enough to provide adequate drainage. Other useful materials are broken pottery and torn egg cartons. Good luck

Why do you want holes? Will these pots be outside in the weather? If yes drill holes as mentioned above. But if you are having these pots where you do the watering I would not put in holes because then you always need something underneath to catch water. You just need the bottom inch or two with drainage type material, egg shells (feed plants too), rocks, pine cones, or pieces of styrofoam.

Get the appropriate bit for the item you're drilling through and you'll be fine. Check at your hardware or home improvement store to get the correct one. In my larger more decorative ones, I've used landscape cloth in the bottom and light weight styrofoam from packages to fill in and then use an ordinary plastic pot inside the decorative pot. In that way you can change out the plantings without having to wrestle a big heavy pot.

A hammer drill and masonry bits make the job go quick.
