Check with your utility company. Where I live, it is prohibited to cover or enclose in any way, shape or form. I think it is ridiculous, as everything now is computerized. As long as any screen can be removed for service, it should not make a difference.
I agree with Naomie, check with the utility company first. We can't cover our either and if we have any plants around it it is their option to remove them if they are in their way to do any repair work. Most may be electronic now, but here they do check the physical reading once in a while just to make sure they are getting the true readings for the house.
