First do your research and find out what grass seed is best for your project. Loosen the soil up a bit with a hard dethatching rake, spread seed, cover with straw, give it a good watering. Water daily for several weeks.

Maybe you could recover the lawn you have by watering and spreading seed. Keep watering if it is dry and wait for the seed to appear. A lawn should be fertilized with weed and feed at least once a year, ariate and mow but not too short........good luck.......
