Should I plant Dianthus in ground or pots?

You can always plant dianthus in the ground or in pots. If you are in a cold winter area where you experience frost, I would plant them in pots so that You can take them indoors for the winter!

My dianthas do well in both planters and in the ground where there is mulch. In fact, they do so well they reseed them selves and come back every year in the ground and spread farther through the mulch, which I love.

Perennial Dianthus will survive (at least) zone 5 winters.

Make sure you're planting the perennial type, as opposed to the Annual.
