Hello Nanni! I am sure that is how most people clean their baseboards! You have to get down on your hands and knees to see what you are doing and to make sure you are getting all the dirt. I usually run a damp rag along the edge where the carpet touches the baseboard too. As long as I am down there I also vacuum along the edges.
I usually vacuum mine off most of the time (doesn't break your back as much) and then a couple times a year do as you mention. Here's an article that might help - https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/weekend-wipe-down-6-easy-some-weird-ways-to-clean-baseboards-202074
Are your baseboards wood or painted? I vacuum first with the brush attachment (more often), then wipe them down with soapy water and a rag like you do. If you have wood trim, you can use lemon oil or old english oil to cover scratches and give the wood a beautiful shine. You just wipe it on with an old rag. Be careful not to drip the oil on carpets or fabric though.
I used to do that but now I use a microfiber duster on a pole to dust them and have found that I don't have to deep clean as often, maybe once a year.
I use the brush attachment on my vacuum!
