How soon can I start grass seed?

I have a lot of bare spots where grass used to be. How soon can I start seeding? Also, how should I cover it so the dog won't scratch it up?

Spring after no frost. Remove any dead grass. Loosen up the soil. Overseed the spot. Work the seeds into the soil. Cover the spot with a little more soil. Water every other day if no rain for about a week. Should see new growth in about two weeks. Do not mow new growth.

The employees at my local farm/seed store told me that grass seeds do not germinate until the temps are about a consistent 65-70 degrees during the day. Putting it down before then just results in the birds coming to visit and the seed just sits there waiting for it to warm up!

Cover with a bit of straw.
