In the quest for a cuter whiteboard I discovered this easy option using a plastic tray and nail varnish.

Standard whiteboards are so ugly and blackboards go well with shabby chic. So this is an interesting alternative

All you need is a plastic tray, cheal nail polish and doublesided tape. In case of a cleanup you may need toiletpaper and nail varnish remover.

Test everything on the back first.

I was a bit worried about the nail varnish remover stripping away the gloss of the plastic tray so I tested all my polish colours and taking it off on the back. The acetone followed by a quick wipe with toiletpaper seemed to work just fine.

Not all nail polish colours work. Some are too translucent.

Next I simply started painting my design directly onto the front of the tray. I kept it small (not sure whether you can create a big flat surface - I’m not good at painting my nails so I didn’t even try). Also, bear in mind that you want your writing to be legible and dark colours or bold designs in the writing area may cause problems. Leave to dry properly before starting the next colour. And leave to dry properly after that.

Finally apply a couple doublesided tape strips on the reverse and stick on a suitable surface.

Or use it as a trinket tray.
