you can make some cool hanging lamp using reclaimed pallet wood. You just need to make sure the wood is thick enough for when you are creating the hole to insert the cable and bulb system

I went to Amazon & bought the lamp cord w switch on it kit thing. Came in a 3 pack. Then went to the thrift store (or WalMart or anywhere) & bought a new lampshade. Got some wire, figured it out. Looks great. My grown sons complimented it...
