Hi Vivian, if you do paint them you will need to be sure they are done with a latex that dries fast and odorless, clean them up with a scrub brush and water, a little soap if they have greasy marks from the seed or peanuts, rinse well, let dry and paint away!

just use vinegar won't harm the birds at all or the bird feeders may need to get some small bottle brushes/toothbrush to clean tight spots/crevices. use nontoxic paint to repaint them; you do not need to repaint them weathering is as much a desired look as a fresh coat of paint..it will however prolong the life of the feeders in harsh weather.

I would clean them with a non-toxic cleaner like Simple Green (available at home improvement stores or Walmart) and hose water. By all means feel free to paint the oriole feeders, but be sure it is compatible for animal use. How wonderful it is you are feeding the birds in your yard!
