Do I have to use black plastic in my flower beds?

I am unable to take care of all my flower beds so thought I’d put down plastic and lots of mulch. Then I’d just use potted plants here and there. Must I use black plastic? What are your ideas on this?

Weeds still find a way to come through the plastic.so its best to remove all grass and use real thick plastic.i used a thinner kind not knowing and about 800 lbs of stone still it finds a way .so i have to use grass killer very carefully around my plants. Dont use stone use mulch

  • I think the plastic and mulch should work. If any weeds get through, spray them right away using this:

Take a spray bottle and cover the bottom with salt and fill it up with vinegar. Add a few drops of dish soap and shake. Spray on the weeds.

Shirley...You can use landscape fabric from Lowe's, Home Depot, and to my surprise I even noticed that our local Dollar General has it. You will probably still find that weeds will find a way to break through.

  • Newspaper, cardboard or landscape fabric will work. Weeds are spread by wind, wildlife and people. Any weeds that pop up will be shallow rooted and easy to pluck.
