How to tackle an out of control flower bed

  • Get out there and start weeding to clean it out. No way around it without getting down and dirty. Work in sections if you don't have time to do it all at once. Or, bite the bullet and hire a clean up crew for a few dollars.

    • Oh Linda! Be careful! How is the knee replacement going? At some point i may need one myself. Foot surgery too? Maybe you need some help this time. Any friends or neighbors willing to come help you out? And you are not bothering anyone! That's what this site is for, to get suggestions. I would love a magic wand and some fairies to help me out . . .

I agree with Naomie. the only way to do it is just to dive in and do it in sections so that you know it is all done in one section before you move on. I was ready to start in cleaning up my veggie garden this week before this blasted snow, rain, sleet hail and high winds came around yesterday and the temps plummeted again!

Rake and weed. Dig and turn soil over. Mix in peat moss and compost into soil.

    Hello!

Please consider posting a photo. If we can see what you have going on in your garden we will then be able to offer realistic suggestions on how you might be able to improve it. Its hard to know if its weeds, or if plants need division or something else.

Additionally, for the best local professional advice

I would highly suggest contacting your cooperative extension. These offices are manned by volunteer master gardeners on site there waiting to answer the communities questions that know your local situation quite well. Master gardeners are required to volunteer back designated hours ( plus continuing education) each year to maintain MG certification -this community outreach and education is their goal.
