Hi Patti, when we went to "save" a bunch of my grandma's rhubarb that had become horribly overgrown, we found all the new growth and dug them all up in the spring. And then we thoroughly cleaned out the bed and pulled out all the weeds and grass before putting the rhubarb back. It doubled in size the next year.
A cup or so of organic fertilizer mixed in the soil will help give it a boost and 50:50 mix of compost or aged manure and good garden soil.
I had my answer ready, but Grandma’sHouseDIY has the best answer I’ve heard. I’ve cut rhubarb, but never had to “refresh” the bed. Way to go, Grandma!
