3M Command hooks spaced equally apart. They stick on. No tools needed. You can use tacks and tack them up. Again no tools just a thumb.

The only tools you will need are a measuring tape, drill, level and pencil to hang up the brackets for the rods. Not sure how you will hang them without the rods.

Whenever I can I use extension rods...not good for heavy long drapes wouldn't hold up but curtains or small valance works great!! Some holding up 20 years. Just measure and follow size you need at store. There are two different kinds. I like ones with a spring you can loosen or tighten.

Swing out two piece Curtain Rods are Much Easier to deal with than the standard two piece slide them together and get a migraine valance rods. You may have seen these in very old films with an 1880s or so setting. If you can afford vintage or antique, go for it. But usually you can get these on Amazon.com, or Etsy.com

Interesting that the question was hanging curtains WITHOUT rods, yet several responses talked about rods. I am also searching for a way to hang a curtain on my front door to cover the oval window on the door. Rods won’t work. I’m going to try Velcro but it didn’t work for hanging a lightweight rod in my closet. (And it was industrial strength Velcro.) Or two sided tape.
