put chicken wire on soil around plants or over the top before the plants grow they will grow up thru the wire. covers pots in fall when they are empty because the squirrels may use them as storage for things they need later in winter/spring.don't use hot pepper/cayenne they don't get burn later until they leave and clean themselves getting it in eyes,mouth,nose,genitals,on nipples burning babies. they don't even associate it with the flower pots.its cruel
