At one point I had fruit flies (no fruit in the house). I bought tall kitchen trash bags with a picture of a bug on the front. Do not know the brand, got then at Walmart. Not a fruit fly in months. Skunks don’t try to get in the outside cans anymore either.

I have found simply putting clorox or any chlorine bleach straight in the drains maybe a few cups each drain, let it sit 15 or 20 minutes and then be sure to rinse it out real well. They are eating the garbage or fruit, but they are living in the drains once they take hold. I cannot however vouch for what this does to a drain, am pretty sure occasional use of it is ok.
